Sir Barry Denny, 2nd baronet
Denny sat in the Irish House of Commons for County Kerry for a brief period in 1794. On 12
January 1794, he married Anne Morgell, daughter of Crosbie Morgell, member for Tralee in the
Irish House of Commons between 1790 and 1794.
On the death of the sitting member for County Kerry, John Blennerhasset, in July 1794, the
resultant by-election was fought between John Gustavus Crosbie and Colonel Henry Herbert.
The other sitting member for the seat was Sir Barry Denny, who apparently promised that he
would not attempt to interfere in any way in the by-election. During the course of the by-
election, however, Crosbie took grave offence at some real or imagined breach of Denny's
neutrality, and as a result, he challenged Denny to a duel.
According the a report in the "Whitehall Evening Post" of 25 October 1794, "on Saturday last
a dispute arose between John Augustus [sic] Crosbie, Esq., one of the candidates for the
county of Kerry, and Sir Barry Denny; it was agreed that they should go out the next day,
and decide the matter; they accordingly met on Sunday at three o'clock in the afternoon,
and immediately took their ground; they fired together, Mr. Crosbie's ball entered Sir Barry's
head over the left eye, which killed him almost instantly….."
Following Denny's death, Crosbie was returned for County Kerry, but three years later, while
riding at night, he fell off his horse and was killed. Naturally, the superstitious local
populace laid the blame for Crosbie's death at the feet of Sir Barry Denny's ghost.
Denny's father-in-law, Crosbie Morgell, was a prominent and ambitious attorney who had
hoped to use his son-in-law's influence to obtain preferment. Denny's death, however,
crushed any such hopes. The story goes that during Denny's lifetime he had complete
management of his son-in-law's estates, but lost such control on Denny's death. Three weeks
after losing this control, Morgell committed suicide by filling his pockets with stones and
drowning himself.
