Sir Robert Davers, 5th baronet
Sir Robert was killed by hostile Indians in June 1763. Some sources state that he was killed in
a boat while crossing Lake Huron. The report below appeared in 'The London Evening Post' of
15 September 1763. It is not for the squeamish......
'Extract from a letter from Niagara, July 31. Letters from Detroit of the 8th inst. inform us, that
the Savages were more numerous than ever about that place; that the garrison were in high
spirits, and had made a sortie, in which an Indian Chief and two others were killed; upon which
the father of the Chief, took out Capt. Campbell, of the 60th regiment, whom they had some
time before made prisoner, and after giving him time to pray, on condition he kneeled on the
body of the slain Chief, they killed him, took out his heart, and eat it, reeking from his body,
and then cut him to pieces. Sir Robert Davers they boiled and eat: And an officer that was
taken at St. Dusky, who has since escaped, saw the skin of Lieut. Robertson's arms made into
a tobacco pouch.'
Sir Hugh Halliday Trevor Dawson, 3rd baronet
Sir Trevor committed suicide in February 1983. The following report on the subsequent inquest
appeared in "The Guardian" of 24 March 1983:-

'Sir Trevor Dawson, a mrchant banker known in racing circles and in the City as the Galloping
Major, killed himself to beat a midnight deadline on Ł137,500 worth of insurance policies, an
inquest jury decided yesterday.
'The inquest at Westminster Coroner's court was told that it was an attempt to provide for his
wife and handicapped son by Sir Trevor, aged 51, who drank champagne before killing himself.
'His body was found on February 15, the day after, by his chauffeur, Mr Harold Munton. Sir
Trevor was slumped in an armchair with a plastic bag over his head in the lounge of his flat in
Belgravia, London.
'In a letter to his wife, Lady Caroline Dawson [sic], dated February 14, he wrote: "There was
no other choice if you and Michael (his spastic son) were to have any security and
independence. I love you and I will be with you always."
'Asked by the Westminster coroner, Dr Paul Knapman, what she thought was meant by "no
other choice," she answered: "I understood him to mean kill himself, commit suicide, I suppose."
'Before the hearing began the jury was told by Dr Knapman that the case assumed rather more
than "incidental importance." He added: "Large sums of money for insurance could hinge on the
date which you decide Sir Trevor died."
'Reaching its verdict, the jury decided that Sir Trevor killed himself to beat the midnight dead-
line on the insurance policies.
'Lady Caroline, who separated from the baronet last year, was due to leave their cottage in
Pewsey, near Marlborough, Wiltshire, at the end of this month, after Barclays Bank, which owns
the premises, obtained a court order for repossession last November.
"This was a real worry to him. He had hoped I would be able to keep my son and live at the
cottage," Lady Caroline told the coroner.
'Until recently her 26-year-old son had been looked after by Sir Trevor's parents, but after their
deaths he had nowhere to live, and for the last two weeks had been in a home.
'Sir Trevor's career in the City ended in 1981 when he was among a group investigated by the
Director of Public Prosecutions over a Stock Exchange gamble.
'A pathologist, Professor Keith Simpson, said it was difficult to say whether Sir Trevor died on
the evening of February 14, or in the early hours of the following day. The jury agreed on the
former date after Miss Pamela Gleason, Sir Trevor's secretary, told the inquest that on February
11 he had asked her to look at the expiry date on one of his insurance policies. It was February
15.
'After the hearing Mr David Long, Sir Trevor's solicitor, said of the jury: "They have decided a
date, and we are grateful for that. But it is not the end of the road, there won't be any more
court action, but it is not the conclusion to this. The next step is to ask the insurance company
for the money. The cottage is mortgaged to the bank, and it is impossible to say the amount
Lady Caroline will get, possibly because of the debts."
Sir Barry Denny, 2nd baronet
Denny sat in the Irish House of Commons for County Kerry for a brief period in 1794. On 12
January 1794, he married Anne Morgell, daughter of Crosbie Morgell, member for Tralee in the
Irish House of Commons between 1790 and 1794.
On the death of the sitting member for County Kerry, John Blennerhasset, in July 1794, the
resultant by-election was fought between John Gustavus Crosbie and Colonel Henry Herbert.
The other sitting member for the seat was Sir Barry Denny, who apparently promised that he
would not attempt to interfere in any way in the by-election. During the course of the by-
election, however, Crosbie took grave offence at some real or imagined breach of Denny's
neutrality, and as a result, he challenged Denny to a duel.
According the a report in the "Whitehall Evening Post" of 25 October 1794, "on Saturday last
a dispute arose between John Augustus [sic] Crosbie, Esq., one of the candidates for the
county of Kerry, and Sir Barry Denny; it was agreed that they should go out the next day,
and decide the matter; they accordingly met on Sunday at three o'clock in the afternoon,
and immediately took their ground; they fired together, Mr. Crosbie's ball entered Sir Barry's
head over the left eye, which killed him almost instantly….."
Following Denny's death, Crosbie was returned for County Kerry, but three years later, while
riding at night, he fell off his horse and was killed. Naturally, the superstitious local
populace laid the blame for Crosbie's death at the feet of Sir Barry Denny's ghost.
Denny's father-in-law, Crosbie Morgell, was a prominent and ambitious attorney who had
hoped to use his son-in-law's influence to obtain preferment. Denny's death, however,
crushed any such hopes. The story goes that during Denny's lifetime he had complete
management of his son-in-law's estates, but lost such control on Denny's death. Three weeks
after losing this control, Morgell committed suicide by filling his pockets with stones and
drowning himself.
