Sir Charles Edward Archibald Watkin Hamilton,
5th baronet [1776] and 3rd baronet [1819]
As far as I am aware, Sir Charles was the first baronet who embraced the Muslim religion.

The following [edited] article appeared in "The Sunday Times" of 18 September 1927:-
'The fact that Sir Archibald Hamilton, England's only Moslem baronet, was married five months
ago to a builder's daughter, only came to light yesterday.
'In a register office in Chichester the ceremony took place on April 26, Sir Archibald's age being
given as 50, his occupation that of ex-officer, and his address Paisley Cottage, Selsey. The
bride's name is Lilian Maud Austen, aged 37, spinster, whose father, William Austen, is a builder.
The witnesses were Mr. Harry C. Rands, a hair-dresser, and a woman named Lydia S. Bells.
'The secret of the wedding is all the more remarkable because of Sir Archibald's great personal
popularity in the district. They all know Lady Hamilton, and until recently have understood that
she had been keeping house for Sir Archibald for the past fifteen years. The baronet's cheerful
disposition is accompanied by very generous habits, and one local resident described him as a
"good Samaritan" to the needy.
'Sir Charles Edward Archibald Watkin Hamilton is the fifth baronet, and is descended from William
Hamilton, one of the five "Kentish petitioners" in 1701. Brother of the sixth Earl of Abercorn, Sir
Archibald succeeded his father, Sir Edward, in 1915. [The brother of the 6th Earl of Abercorn
relates to William Hamilton, not Sir Archibald]. He was formerly a probationer in the Scots
Guards, and a lieutenant in the 4th Batt. Royal Sussex Regiment.'
After his conversion to Islam in 1924, Sir Archibald adopted the name of "Abdullah" and following
her marriage in 1927, Lilian Austen also converted to Islam and adopted the name "Miriam."
The Kentish Petition was a petition presented to the House of Commons on 29 April 1701, in
which the freeholders of Kent urged the House to vote supplies to enable William III to fulfil his
treaty obligations. It petitioned inter alia that "the loyal addresses of this House may be turned
into bills of supply." The House of Commons voted that the petition was "scandalous, insolent,
and seditious" and imprisoned those who presented it.
