| CONSTITUENCY ABOLISHED 1997 | |||||
| John Dyke Acland, MP for Callington 1774-1778 | |||||
| John Dyke Acland was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 7th baronet [E 1644]. | |||||
| After being educated at Eton and Oxford, he departed on the Grand Tour of Europe. On his | |||||
| return he married Lady Christiana Harriet Fox Strangways, daughter of the Earl of Ilchester. | |||||
| He entered the House of Commons at the general election in 1774, representing the seat of | |||||
| Callington, then controlled by the Countess of Orford. In Parliament he was strongly opposed | |||||
| to the proposal that the American colonies be given the right to raise their own taxes. In the | |||||
| meantime, he had purchased a commission in the army, and in 1775 he requested permission | |||||
| to raise a regiment. His hawkish view of the American situation no doubt contributed to this | |||||
| action and, in October 1775, he declared in the House that members needed to choose | |||||
| between American independence or war to enforce the colonies' submission. | |||||
| Soon after, by now a major in the 20th Regiment of Foot, he left England for America, | |||||
| accompanied by his wife. He was wounded, for the first time, during the Battle of | |||||
| Hubbardton on 7 July 1777. His second, and more serious injuries, were received when he | |||||
| was in the advance party in the attack on Bemis Heights (at the Second Battle of Saratoga) | |||||
| on 7 October 1777. Acland was wounded in both legs and was captured by the American | |||||
| forces. | |||||
| After his capture his wife was frantic with anxiety and she prevailed upon the British | |||||
| commander, General John Burgoyne, to provide her with a letter of passage addressed to | |||||
| the American commander, General Horatio Gates, in order that she might be able to join her | |||||
| husband. She spent the next three months with her husband in the American camp, nursing | |||||
| her husband back to health. Eventually, Acland was released on parole and he and his wife, | |||||
| who was by then heavily pregnant, returned to England in March 1778. | |||||
| Due to the courteous treatment he and his wife had received from the American soldiers, | |||||
| Acland's attitude towards America appears to have been tempered by this time. As a result, | |||||
| when a Lieutenant Lloyd made some disparaging remarks about American soldiers, Acland | |||||
| challenged Lloyd to a duel. Every source appears to have a different outcome to this duel - | |||||
| one says that Acland died of wounds he received, another says he died from a fall on his | |||||
| head during the duel, but the most common story is that neither party was injured, although | |||||
| Acland caught a chill on the duelling-ground and died from the resulting fever. | |||||
